- Sheriff Phalen has received numerous commendations & awards, but the one he is most proud is the "Ohio Distringuished Law Enforcement Award" presented to him in 2004 by the Ohio Attorney General.

- Sheriff Phalen hosts a weekly radio program on WFCO 90.9 FM, as well as a monthly television program "Safety First", shown locally on Time Warner Cable. He has also been featured in USA Today newspaper and on Fox Nes and CNN.
